WEBP and JPG: what changes
WEBP images saved from websites do not open in every program. Converting to JPG gives you a file that older software, printers and upload forms accept.
WEBP WebP image
WEBP is a modern web format that is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and it can hold transparency too. All current browsers show it, though some older programs do not.
JPG JPEG image
JPG is the everyday photo format. It stores millions of colours in a small file by discarding detail the eye barely notices, and it opens on every phone, computer and website.
Good to know before you convert
- Both formats save space by simplifying detail. Keep the quality setting at 85 or above so that converting does not visibly soften the picture.
- JPG has no transparency. Transparent parts of your WEBP are filled with white.
Questions and answers
What happens to a transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG or WEBP if you need to keep them.
Can I control the size of the JPG file?
Yes. The quality slider trades file size against detail. Lower values give smaller files.
Will the JPG look different from the WEBP?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several WEBP files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
