ICO and JPG: what changes
People convert ICO to JPG when a file made for favicons and Windows program icons has to be used for photos, email attachments and web uploads.
ICO Windows icon
ICO is the icon format of Windows and of website favicons, the small picture in a browser tab. Icons are square and at most 256 pixels wide.
JPG JPEG image
JPG is the everyday photo format. It stores millions of colours in a small file by discarding detail the eye barely notices, and it opens on every phone, computer and website.
Good to know before you convert
- ICO stores every pixel exactly, while JPG saves space by simplifying fine detail. The JPG will be much smaller. You can set the quality; 85 or more is hard to tell from the original.
- JPG has no transparency. Transparent parts of your ICO are filled with white.
- An ICO file can hold several sizes of the same icon. Your browser decodes one of them, normally the largest.
Questions and answers
What happens to a transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG or WEBP if you need to keep them.
Can I control the size of the JPG file?
Yes. The quality slider trades file size against detail. Lower values give smaller files.
Will the JPG look different from the ICO?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several ICO files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
