TIFF and JPG: what changes
TIFF files are large and many websites and apps refuse them. Converting to JPG gives a file that is easier to send and opens everywhere.
TIFF Tagged Image File Format
TIFF is a lossless format used in printing, scanning and archiving. It keeps full quality at the price of large files, and most browsers cannot display it.
JPG JPEG image
JPG is the everyday photo format. It stores millions of colours in a small file by discarding detail the eye barely notices, and it opens on every phone, computer and website.
Good to know before you convert
- TIFF stores every pixel exactly, while JPG saves space by simplifying fine detail. The JPG will be much smaller. You can set the quality; 85 or more is hard to tell from the original.
- JPG has no transparency. Transparent parts of your TIFF are filled with white.
- For a TIFF that contains several pages, the first page is converted.
Questions and answers
What happens to a transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG or WEBP if you need to keep them.
Can I control the size of the JPG file?
Yes. The quality slider trades file size against detail. Lower values give smaller files.
Will the JPG look different from the TIFF?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several TIFF files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
