HEIC and PNG: what changes
HEIC photos from an iPhone often will not open on Windows PCs, in older programs or on websites. Converting to PNG makes them usable everywhere.
HEIC High Efficiency Image (Apple photos)
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for camera photos. It takes about half the space of a JPG, but many Windows PCs, websites and older devices cannot open it.
PNG Portable Network Graphics
PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no loss, and supports transparent backgrounds. Files are larger than JPG for photos but stay perfectly sharp for text, logos and screenshots.
Good to know before you convert
- PNG stores pixels without loss, so no further quality is lost in the conversion. It cannot restore detail that the HEIC already discarded, and the file will usually be bigger.
Questions and answers
Do I need an iPhone or a Mac for this?
No. The HEIC photo is decoded by Filetaki in any modern browser, including on Windows and Android.
Will the PNG look different from the HEIC?
No. The conversion is lossless, so the picture is identical.
Can I convert several HEIC files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
