PNG and BMP: what changes
People convert PNG to BMP when a file made for logos, screenshots and graphics with transparency has to be used for legacy Windows programs and some hardware.
PNG Portable Network Graphics
PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no loss, and supports transparent backgrounds. Files are larger than JPG for photos but stay perfectly sharp for text, logos and screenshots.
BMP Windows Bitmap
BMP is an old, very simple Windows format that stores pixels with no compression. Files are large, but some older software and devices still ask for it.
Good to know before you convert
- Both formats store pixels without loss, so the picture looks exactly the same after converting.
- BMP has no transparency. Transparent parts of your PNG are filled with white.
Questions and answers
What happens to a transparent background?
BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG or WEBP if you need to keep them.
Will the BMP look different from the PNG?
