JPG and GIF: what changes
People convert JPG to GIF when a file made for photos, email attachments and web uploads has to be used for simple graphics and short animations.
JPG JPEG image
JPG is the everyday photo format. It stores millions of colours in a small file by discarding detail the eye barely notices, and it opens on every phone, computer and website.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format
GIF is limited to 256 colours and is best known for short animations. For still pictures it suits simple graphics more than photos.
Good to know before you convert
- GIF stores pixels without loss, so no further quality is lost in the conversion. It cannot restore detail that the JPG already discarded, and the file will usually be bigger.
- GIF can show at most 256 colours. Filetaki picks the best 256 for your picture; photos may show slight banding in smooth areas such as skies.
Questions and answers
Will the GIF look different from the JPG?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several JPG files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
